MURMUR
A Transmedia Project and Urban
Ecosystem for Pollinator Awareness
The Murmur project is a narrative and transmedia ecosystem designed to raise awareness among citizens and institutions in Bolzano about the importance of pollinating insects in creating resilient and circular urban environments. The project is a collaboration with Fiera Messe Bolzano and Amorim Cork.
The Latin term "Murmur," meaning buzzing or whispering, represents the sound generated by pollinating insects in flight. Murmur offers an alternative perspective, highlighting the interconnection between these insects and plants, emphasizing their vital pollination services to the ecosystem.
Murmur utilizes various channels, both physical and digital, to tell the story of pollinating insects and promote a more interconnected urban system.
To promote the beehive and bee products, we have developed an educational kit that combines honey jars and guidelines on how to support insects in an urban environment. This kit is an example of how packaging can highlight biodiversity in urban areas and encourage public engagement.
The Murmur guide, an educational tool, provides insights into observing cities differently and fosters a connection with the ecosystem. To make it accessible, we have integrated a digital version on the project's website, featuring stories, scrolly-telling, and the importance of pollinating insects.
The structure of the Murmur beehive is the result of in-depth research into traditional beekeeping techniques and collaboration with experts, notably Fiera beekeeper Michael Hafner. The hive is constructed with local materials such as spruce wood, wool felt, and cork, focusing on thermal insulation and inclusivity for both solitary and honey bees.
Looking to the future, Murmur envisions interconnected urban ecosystems that include green roofs as vital elements. The project aims to inspire cultural change through events at Fiera Messe and integrate the expert network into scientific research, such as the use of bees as bioindicators.

In conclusion, Murmur seeks to create new metaphors for our relationship with the Earth in urban contexts. As a promoter of cultural change, Murmur envisions Fiera Messe as a facilitator of scientific research and aims to extend its impact to other institutions for a significant transformation in the urban area of Bolzano. Murmur aims to contribute to a more sustainable and interconnected urban future.
